What makes a church effective?

What makes a church credible in the community? Good events? Or good works?

I kid you not:  Riverview Church staff went offsite today to discuss what the church is and what we are becoming. And that sign (above) was at the entrance of the room we used!

So, what do you think? Does the church best represent God with good events, or good works?

No, you can’t have it both ways. It’s a question of where you place priority:

  • Are we mostly about putting on good weekend services and special meetings?
  • Should most of our effort go into serving God by caring for people in the wider community?

What does your church do? You can find out by looking at the rosters to see what you’re asking your volunteers to do.

What does Jesus want his church to do?

What comes to mind from his teaching in the Gospels?

Did Jesus say:

  • Good events glorify your Father in heaven?
  • Good works glorify your Father in heaven?

Think about it. Which path makes his church credible in the community?

By this everyone will know that you are my disciples if you …

Hmm…

  1. I’ve been really challenged by Proverbs 31: 8-9 – “Speak up for those who cannot speak for themselves, for the rights of all who are destitute. Speak up and judge fairly, defend the rights of the poor and needy”.
