Have you read through the whole Bible? How do you decide which bits to read? Need a bit of help with some of the Old Testament?
Haydn Nelson (senior pastor of Riverview Church) wanted to provide a way to help people read Scripture well in today’s busy world. The result was an app for iOS or Android, or from a website if you prefer.
How it works:
- Every day, it displays two chapters of Scripture from the New Living Translation.
- With the Scripture is an Observation (what it meant to them), an Application (what it means to us), and a Prayer (response to what God said) — SOAP.
- To ensure we get the message of a book, we finish the whole book before moving on to another. (The only exception is Psalms.)
- Each year, you read the whole New Testament (NT), and half the Old. In two years, you’re read the whole Bible, and the NT twice.
- Each quarter, you read one of the Gospels, some NT letters, Torah and/or OT history books, some Psalms, and some of the OT prophets. This makes for a balanced diet, while still being able to focus on one book at a time.
- If you miss a day, you can click on the date at the top and go back to yesterday. (Readings remain available for about 6 months.)
- Since others in the church are also reading the same two chapters each day, you can make it a communal experience. Discuss your thoughts with your connect group or on social media.
An unusual feature of this schedule is reading through the NT twice for each time through the OT. This helps to keep your diet balanced since the OT is much larger (929 chapters versus 260).
